Thierry Vansweevelt studied law at the UAntwerpen (University of Antwerp) (cum laude). He gained his doctorate in Law with a thesis on “The civil law liability of the doctor and the hospital” (University of Antwerp, 1991). His doctoral thesis was awarded the prestigious “Fernand Collin Prize” in 1992, and he was awarded the “UAntwerpen Research Council Prize” for his entire academic work. As the first professor of medical law Thierry Vansweevelt has been appointed member of the Royal Academy for Medicine of Belgium in 2011.
Thierry Vansweevelt is a member of the Bar of Antwerp as well as the Bar of Brussels. He specialized in medical liability law in which he defends both hospitals, doctors and patients. Insurance law is also close to his heart. He is also devoted to medical law concerning for example the duty of professional confidentiality and euthanasia. Typical cases include those of “Baby Charlotte” in which he obtained the acquittal of a senior doctor accused of breaching professional confidentiality and the case of the physician who was struck off for using euthanasia for urgent reasons, but who obtained a triple amount of compensation.
As a full professor of the UAntwerpen Thierry lectures on liability law and health law. Between 2003 and 2006 he was dean of the Law Faculty. Together with Prof. dr. Britt Weyts, he is the author of the manual “Handboek Buitencontractueel Aansprakelijkheidsrecht” (2009). He is also, together with Prof. dr. Filip Dewallens, the editor of the two-volume standard reference work “Handboek Gezondheidsrecht” (Manual on Health Law) (2014). Thierry is the chairman of AHLEC (Antwerp Health Law and Ethics Chair) and of ALLIC (Antwerp Liability Law and Insurance Chair), the editor in chief of the 'Tijdschrift voor Gezondheidsrecht/Revue de Droit de la Santé' (Journal for Health Law) and a member of the Executive Committee of the 'Vlaamse Vereniging voor Gezondheidsrecht' (Flemish Association for Health Law). He is much in demand as a speaker at national and international conferences.
